In 1967, Thurman Robert and Hisako T. Roberts opened their restaurant, the Salt Lick Bar-B-Que, on the Driftwood ranch where Thurman's father was born and raised. It quickly became a popular gathering place for locals, but it also attracted deer who would come to lick the salt and minerals in the exposed rocks scattered throughout the property. This is how the restaurant got its famous name. Thurman and Hisako did everything by hand, crediting the quality of their food to cooking with love and care, and they were only satisfied when the job was done right. Their family is proud to continue that tradition.

Totally Texas products, whether they are made in Texas, take on a familiar Texas shape, or are inspired by local tastes, remind us of everything we love about the Lone Star State. The Totally Texas BBQ Sauce is a perfect example of this. Originating in 1967 at the Salt Lick restaurant in Driftwood, Texas, this all-natural, gluten-free sauce can be used for smoking, grilling, as a salad dressing, a dipping sauce, or just about anything. The packaging may vary, but the quality and taste remain consistent.

This recipe, which I am proud to share, would undoubtedly make Thurman and Hisako very happy. Sincerely, M. Scott Roberts.
